This calculator checks modulo-10 arithmetic only. It does not verify allocation, ownership, licensing, or GS1 certification.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose calculation or validation.
  2. Enter seven digits to calculate the check digit, or eight digits to validate the complete number.
  3. Copy the result with any leading zeros intact.

Passing this check confirms the check-digit arithmetic, not that the number has been assigned to a product.

Formula and method

EAN-8 uses the GS1 modulo-10 calculation: multiply body digits by alternating 3 and 1 weights from the right, sum them, and complete the next multiple of ten.

Worked example

EAN-8 body 9638507 has weighted sum 86 and check digit 4, producing 96385074.

How to interpret the result

EAN-8 is a compact GTIN representation for appropriately allocated items. Keep all seven body digits, including leading zeros.

Limitations

This tool validates arithmetic only and does not issue, allocate or certify EAN-8 numbers or barcode artwork.
